Thoroughly Modern Millie

MK Theatre 24th - 28th January 2017

Winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie is based on the 1967 Academy Award-winning film starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing.

It takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in 1920's New York City, when ‘moderns’ including a flapper named Millie Dillmount were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love...and this musical is essentially a love story but with a twist!

2016 Strictly Come Dancing finalist, World Ballroom Showdance Champion and Professional Dancer Joanne Clifton takes on the title role of Millie Dillmount, a Kansas girl determined to make it big in New York City. And wow did she deliver...a pure delight to watch dance but also has a voice too!

Michelle Collins (EastEnders and Coronation Street) gave a sterling performance as the faux Chinese landlady Mrs Meers - giving the role just enough black humour and each time her signature phrase "Sad to be alone in this world" was delivered, it got bigger and better (and more laughs).

The cast is completed by the brilliant Sam Barrett (Jimmy Smith) and the very funny Graham McDuff as Trevor Graydon.  The two bounce off of each other in their respective roles superbly and gave the audience many moments to chuckle.

Both Katherine Glover (Miss Dorothy) and Jenny Fitzpatrick (Muzzy) were great, Fitzpatrick has one hell of a voice!

All the roles (even the smaller ones) were played extremely well; there is not a weak moment throughout.

The costumes are sparkly and exuberant, the use of colour is fabulous against the monochrome backdrop of a New York street.

From explosive tap numbers to a ‘Fred and Ginger’ dance routine on a window ledge and features hit songs including Gimme Gimme, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Not for the Life of Me, all accompanied by a live band.

The whole cast deliver magical moments throughout this dazzling musical, it's stupendously silly - even the cast at times had a hard time keeping a straight face!

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a brilliantly funny and an entertaining show for all the family.

Enjoy!
